“Polished lacquer does not only reflect our response to form, it defines form”. It was through this quote that my attention was turned towards lacquering and japanning. With such an interest on the possibilities of paint and painting materialsI was curious to see if there was some aspect of traditional craft that could be used within a contemporary painting practice.Whereas traditional lacquer involves the process of filling, lacquering and polishing I want to investigate the possibilities of creating depth and form within my work but at the same time maintain the definite textured surface to my work. Between each working of paint on the canvas surface, whether the image is kept or changed, a layer of varnish has been introduced. This reveals the true colour and depth has been added to the work. This has also introduced a visual history to each piece documenting the growth and process of the painting.
